I have been on Instagram now for quite a few years. How I use it has evolved significantly and the pictures I share have also changed - rather dramatically in some instances. Gone are the days of over saturated close-ups of a flower in the garden, to including the chickens and ducks I used to keep, to food and cakes I would make - to what I have today, which is where I photograph and film the work I’ve been working on that day on my desk.
Why do I only take photos of my work and my desk? Well, because in the past I would spend hours on an Instagram photograph. Maybe an entire day. I would gather flowers and arrange them in a beautiful way on a page of my notebook. Or I’d bake cookies and set them out on the table top with the ingredients in bowls and little tags saying what the ingredients were. And by doing so I’d neglect my writing work. I’ve realised my writing has to take priority so I had to work out how I could fit Instagram in, in order to build and grow my audience, around my writing. And I do that by taking simple photos of my desk, editing them, then uploading with a caption. Or I might make a timelapse of me working.
I know it sounds like a lot of work in theory but with iPhones having the timelapse function and simple apps such as Splice available to put the clips together, it’s not as time consuming as you might think - although obviously there is a learning curve to it.
The video below shares more about how I incorporate Instagram into my writing day.
