My writing life has been revolutionised in the past few weeks. I have discovered a system of tackling my writing and creative goals which has allowed me to make indentations into my big, overwhelming, writing projects.
If you’ve been reading this blog for a while now you’ll know I have been on a bit of a journey with my writing. I started back in 2006 or 2007 because I wanted to be part of an online writing group. I raced them to finish my first draft and this was great. Then I got massively distracted by all the internet had to offer. Writing for websites, Instagram, Huffington Post, blogging, book clubs, Pinterest…I’ve tried lots of different things - but never really sat back and wondered if I was heading in the right direction.
Then, as I was writing essay number four for my Patrons on Patreon some weeks ago I had a lightbulb moment:
I am a writer and my ultimate goal is to make a decent living as a writer. Despite the horror stories of writers not being paid much I firmly believe I can do this. I don’t mean making money solely through my writing but by utilising social media to help me create an income in other areas. These other forms of income however need to be secondary and not primary. They need to be an add-on rather than the main focus. And even though writing is not my highest form of income – at the moment – I still need to treat it as though it is.
My writing was my ultimate goal. Yet it had my lowest priority because, at the moment, it didn’t make me any money. I was acting like an influencer. But I wanted to be a writer. And with the limited time I had available I didn’t have time to do both.
However. My writing projects scared me. They are so vast. So overwhelming and I have all these issues like imposter syndrome and so on. I needed a system to make these projects more manageable. And then I found Sarra Cannon of Heart Breathings. Sarra is self- published and is helping me, via her YouTube channel, with my writing and with my planning.
So I’ve taken on board how she has managed to get so much done and created a similar system. This video will show you more. It’s revolutionary. Simple. But a real game changer:
